Member Spotlight
Danny and Nancy Puig
Tampa, Fla.
FMCA membership
number:
F199623. We joined FMCA
in 1995.
Our current
motorhome is: a 1998 36-foot
Fleetwood Discovery (diesel)
Other motorhomes
that we have owned:
A 1993 29-foot Dutchmen class C
A 1995 33-foot Fleetwood Pace Arrow
FMCA chapter membership:
Palm Beach Gold Coasters
We decided to buy a
motorhome because:
We had owned folding camping trailers while raising our children. As
they grew up and left the nest, a motorhome made it easier to
travel. We love the freedom of the motorhome. Being able to go where
we want to go, when we want to is priceless.
Current or former
occupation:
I (Nancy) am currently an executive assistant for a company in
downtown Tampa. Danny is a plant operation supervisor for the local
community college.
Children,
grandchildren:
We have five grown children and, as of August 2003, four grandsons.
We have also been blessed with children brought into our children's
lives and ours through their marriages.
The best thing
about motorhoming is:
Being able to take a vacation and not worrying about flight
reservations, hotels or even restaurants. It is like having all of
North America right in your own back yard. You can stand at the edge
of the Grand Canyon and then, that evening, sleep in your own bed knowing that the next day you may be having dinner in Vegas and still be able to sleep in your own bed.
We travel in the motorhome approximately:
Six to 12 weeks per year. We still work, so we have to grab weekends
and our yearly vacation, but once we retire, it will be different.
When we're not
motorhoming, we're:
Mostly, working. We enjoy getting together with our friends on
weekends when we aren't attending RV rallies or on weekend trips in
the motorhome.
Our all-time
favorite motorhome trip was:
Our trip to California and everything in between. On the way, we
stopped at the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. When we reached Merced,
my brother and his wife showed us Yosemite, Bodie ghost town and San
Francisco. On our way home, we stopped in Utah to see our daughter
and two grandchildren and visited the Rockies in Colorado. We then
stopped in Georgia and picked up some pecans and peaches before
heading home to Florida.
Our favorite
motorhoming destinations include:
Anywhere that has mountains the Smokies, Rockies, Ozarks
it doesn't matter. We are both native Floridians and really love
getting away from all the congestion of city life. But more than
anything else, we love to go to Utah and visit our daughter and
grandsons, PJ and Joey. And now that our other son has moved to Iowa with his
wife (who is expecting our new grandson), that will be another
favorite spot.
One of our fondest
motorhoming memories is:
The wonderful people we have met while on the road. There is
nothing like the camaraderie of RVers.
Our “dream” motorhome trip would be:
We would love to make it to Washington State or Oregon. That is
just a little too far with only two weeks vacation, but it gives us
something to look forward to when we retire.
Our worst motorhoming experience was:
When our front right tire had a blowout while we were traveling.
Luckily no one was hurt, but it was very frightening and frustrating
to have to walk two days for a replacement tire at a gas station. We
made the most of it, though, and visited the local sites. Afterward,
most of it became just another great memory.
The best thing about our current motorhome is:
There is no one thing that I can name. It is a combination of
all the great features that make it a pleasure to travel in. We do
love the large compartments which make storing gifts for our
grandchildren easier and gives us an opportunity to spoil them even
more.
A special or unique feature of our motorhome is:
With all the great features in our motorhome, like the washer-dryer,
satellite TV, etc., it always amazes people when we show them our
cup holders on the driver and passenger seats. Push blue to keep
your drink cold, red to keep it hot. It's simple but very handy
while going down the road.
Something about motorhoming that we know now but
didn’t know when we started is:
When we first started, we were real greenhorns. The fun was in
learning all the tricks of the trade and finding out how wonderful
and generous other RVers can be with their knowledge.
If we could change one thing about our motorhome, it would be:
I guess I would rather have a window at the kitchen sink. Our last
motorhome had a window there and it was great being able to look out
while I was doing dishes.
Pets
that travel with us:
We have two wonderful long-haired Chihuahuas, Ricky and Lucy Tu.
They love traveling in our motorhome and especially love rallies. We
just acquired a new long-haired Chihuahua puppy, who will be joining
Ricky and Lucy Tu on trips, as well. Desi Lu is also a long-haired
Chihuahua.
The best alteration or addition that we’ve made to
our motorhome is:
The satellite dome. Now we can get our favorite TV shows
wherever we are without worrying about which way the dish is facing.
It is all automatic.
Our favorite thing about FMCA is:
The camaraderie of the chapters, and
Family Motor Coaching magazine. We can't wait for its arrival
each month and read it together.
A motorhoming tip that we’d like to share with other
motorhomers is:
I used to carry a cutting board in the motorhome but found that
it was never the right size. Too big is too heavy, too small is too
small. I happened to go to a Wal-Mart and they had clear-plastic,
one piece (not pressed) placemats on sale. I bought several of them
and now carry one or two in the motorhome. They are great for using
on the counter to chop or prepare foods so you don't stain or damage
the counter. Plus, they're easy to wash. When a mat starts to look
old or if I used it to cut chicken, I toss it. They're lightweight,
easy to store, inexpensive, and easily replaced.
Our hobbies are:
Danny enjoys working on the motorhome and thinking up ideas to make
it better. I enjoy digital photography. To see an example, visit
www.worldisround.com/home/mhmama/index.html.
Our favorite way to exercise is:
We love to walk, especially around a campground. You meet people,
look at how others set up their camp, and get exercise.
Favorite movie:
Danny is always teasing me because my favorite movie is It's
a Wonderful Life. Our daughter got it for me on DVD so I can
watch it anytime I wish on my laptop, even while we're traveling.
Favorite book: Too many to name.
Favorite singer, music:
"Believe" by Cher. Danny seems to like any song that mentions Friday
or weekends.
Favorite restaurant:
Logan's in Tampa has the best potato soup and fresh bread, and
who can resist the bucket of peanuts on every table?
Favorite store:
Wal-Mart, Camping World, Home Depot
Favorite campground:
Rock Crusher Canyon RV Resort in Crystal River, Fla. It has great
campsites, a screened pool, and a rustic setting with all the modern
conveniences.
When motorhomers visit our state or hometown, they
should be sure to see:
Our home state is Florida, which of course is famous for Disney
World and white beaches. We also have great little quaint towns that
sometimes get forgotten, like Crystal River and Titusville.
The
item that is always in our motorhome's refrigerator while we're
traveling is:
We never seem to leave home without having cookie batter. I make
it up before we leave for an outing. When we get settled at our
campsite, Danny sets me up under the awning with my little
confection oven and I start baking cookies. We have met a lot of
great friends who just can't resist the smell of fresh cookies
baking. I am often referred to as the "Cookie Lady" by our FMCA
chapter.
Our
advice to new motorhomers is:
If you have access to a computer and the Internet, check out all the
great sites on RVing, including FMCA.com and RV America. Become a
member of FMCA and join a chapter in our area. Don't be afraid to
ask questions of other RVers. We are a social lot and love to share
what we have learned.
Behind our motorhome, we tow:
A 2001 Saturn L300, with a tow bar
If we could meet anyone from history:
There are so many interesting people from our history that it would
be difficult to choose. But I would love to meet my grandfather, who
came to the United States from Norway when he was 17 after being
shanghaied as a boy to work on a ship. He died when my father was
only 10, so I never met him. But the more I find out about him, the
more I want to know him better.
Our favorite activity to do inside the motorhome is:
Entertain friends.

Other comments:
Because we were able to go camping with our children as they were
growing up, they have seen a lot of interesting and/or historical
places, such as Gettysburg, Niagara Falls, Washington, D.C., Amish
Farms, the Alamo, and the book depository where John F. Kennedy was
shot, just to name a few. We gave them memories that last longer
than any Nintendo game.
