Member Spotlight

Mary Faye and Don CrosbyDon and Mary Faye Crosby
San Diego, Calif.

FMCA membership number:
F205392. We joined FMCA in October 1996.

Our current motorhome is:  a 2001 Rexhall RoseAir

Other motorhomes that we have owned:
A 1967 18-foot Ford Tioga
A 1987 27-foot Fleetwood Pace Arrow
A 1996 29-foot Rexhall RoseAir

FMCA chapter memberships: Rexhall International, Rexasaurus'

We decided to buy a motorhome because:
We had never traveled or seen much of the U.S.A. and we wanted to drive to Alaska. The old Tioga kept us comfortable when we took our kids water-skiing.

Current or former occupation:
Don worked as a system operator with Southern California Edison Co. for 35 years. I (Mary Faye) was first a homemaker, then an assistant to a state Senator, and then worked in insurance.

Children, grandchildren:
We have three sons: Gary, Jim and Steve; three daughters-in-law: Judy, Jill and Barb; and seven grandkids.

The best thing about motorhoming is:
Sleeping in our own bed when we travel. And, not having to pack and unpack like when motel-hopping. We travel in the motorhome approximately two to three months per year.

When we're not motorhoming, we're:
Catching up with our kids and grandkids. Don woodworks — he used to build boats and now builds furniture. I play bridge, sew and have fun with the computer.

Our all-time favorite motorhome trip was:
Our first — to Alaska. We just bought an older coach, fixed it up and off we went!

Our favorite motorhoming destinations include:
I love the Florida Keys. I'm a water nut. Don loves Idaho and Montana trips for the fishing.

One of our fondest motorhoming memories is:
All of our trips across the country. We particularly enjoyed ferrying from north Vancouver Island to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada, and traveling in that area.

Our “dream” motorhome trip would be:
We already did it — our first long one, to Alaska.

Our worst motorhoming experience was:
I broke my leg about 10 minutes after we picked up our three granddaughters to start off on a month-long vacation. Moral of the story: Sit down while traveling down the highway!

The best thing about our current motorhome is:
Our L-shaped couch and the entertainment center.

Something about motorhoming that we know now but didn’t know when we started is:
How often we would cross the country. How much there is to see and do. That we would truly enjoy getting acquainted with this wonderful country.

Pets that travel with us:
We have two kittens that are 7 months old. Their names are Whiskers and Dixie.

The best alteration or addition that we’ve made to our motorhome is:
Our cat house. The cats can enter from an opening in the entry stairs and have a whole screened-off apartment complete with potty facilities and an outdoor view!

Our favorite thing about FMCA is: Family Motor Coaching magazine

If we could appear as contestants on any TV game show, we would choose:
I would choose "Wheel of Fortune." It's pretty easy.

A motorhoming tip that we’d like to share with other motorhomers is:
Slow down, smell the flowers. Take time to enjoy the area in which you are traveling. Don't drive 12 hours a day and get off the interstate.

Our hobbies are:
We love to take cruises another way to travel without unpacking. And, we both love to snorkel.

Our favorite way to exercise is:  Walking and riding stationary bikes

Favorite movie:  Any James Bond film

Favorite book:  Anything by James Patterson

Favorite singer, music:  Ella Fitzgerald, jazz

Favorite restaurant:  Outback Steakhouse

Favorite store:  Mine is Nordstrom.

Favorite campground:  Grizzly Campground, outside of Yellowstone National Park in the town of West Yellowstone, Mont. It has easy access to the park.

When motorhomers visit our state or hometown, they should be sure to see:
San Diego Wild Animal Park and the San Diego Zoo. Yosemite, the redwoods in northern California. The eastern side of the Sierras.

The item that is always in our motorhome's refrigerator is:  Ice cream

Behind our motorhome, we tow:
A 1993 two-door Chevy Blazer with four-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, all painted to match the coach.

If we could invite one person from history to dinner, we'd choose:
Harry Truman. He was a common man thrust into greatness. It would be interesting to hear how he managed that.

Our favorite activity to do inside the motorhome is:
Sleep, eat, watch NASCAR races.

Other motorhomers can reach us via e-mail at:  dcrosby@san.rr.com

Other comments:
We belong to Rexasaurus', an FMCA chapter for Rexhall owners. We've met many wonderful friends through this chapter. I do the chapter newsletter and Don is serving his second year as chapter president.
